Write thriller

A thriller is a horror novel that tells the story of a person who, by chance or as a result of intrigue, gets into a game with overpowering opponents. A well-made thriller is characterized by the fact that it is divided into two parts.

The main characters

In the first half, the main character is surprised and thrown by certain circumstances from their usual trajectory. Neither the main character nor the readers know why. In the second half of the thriller, the main character then has to face the game, with the thriller captivating readers by shaking with the main character.

The arc of suspense is maintained throughout and ultimately leads to a showdown in which the main character either wins or finally fails. A variant of the classic thriller are Psychothriller.

These are based on the same pattern, but are more direct and personal. This means that psycho-thrillers usually play in an environment that is very familiar to readers, such as telling the story of a neighbor who is moving in again.

The psycho thriller receives the special tension through the harmless-looking environment and the proximity of the reader to the main character. By their very nature, thrillers are similar to the detective novel and overlap with the mystery genre, but the differences lie in their actions. In a thriller, the protagonist is exposed to the moral, psychological, and physical effects of his adversary, culminating in the victory or defeat of the protagonist rather than the thriller in the investigation of the crime.

Who wants to write a good thriller, must first decide whether he wants to write a classic or a psychological thriller. In a classic thriller usually the description of the plot is in the foreground.

In the case of a psychological thriller, on the other hand, the characters and their psyche come into focus and the conflicts develop more on the emotional and the mental, but usually less on the physical level. For example, perceptions often represent the central theme of the thriller, such as the main character trying to recognize what deception and what truth is.

Write instructions and planning to the thriller

The instructions for a thriller always starts with the planning. In the course of planning, the plot is first defined in a short summary. Based on this expose, the characters of the thriller are created in the next step. It is important to design the characters as comprehensively as possible, for example with name, occupation, strengths and weaknesses, family, past and backgrounds.

However, it is important to create the most complex possible. This means that the main character is never just unstable and the evil adversary is not only bad, but also has good, trustworthy and endearing features.

It is also advisable to make short summaries of the individual chapters.

Here the author can note down what happens in each chapter, from which perspective the chapter is told and which intervals are described in the chapter. In this way it is much easier for the author to build up the tension continuously and to hold until the final showdown. The actual tension is called tension and is divided into three different types of tension with Surprise, Suspense and Mystery, which however are usually combined in writing.

Surprise means the element of surprise, an acute threat situation that occurs immediately but only lasts for a short time. Suspense stands for a wide range of suspense.

The tension is thus maintained over a longer period, the attacks and threats are usually predictable. For example, in a thriller the protagonist managed to escape a threatening situation, but the actual tension remains, because similar situations can occur again and again.

Mystery describes a rather subliminal tension that lets the readers puzzle how things will go on. This form of tension is usually built by withholding information.
